Whenever one steps foot into a new country, one must understand that each country is different. Something that passes as socially acceptable in one country is not necessarily accepted in another. For example: In Nepal, it is considered disgusting to share food from the same plate, which is the exact opposite of Korean dining culture. Don’t be alarmed, these quirks are what make a country unique.
This guide will let you know what to do, and what not to do, while you’re visiting Singapore – be it on a Singapore honeymoon or a Singapore family tour.
Do’s
- Do carry cash. Some local Singaporean stores, shops, restaurants etc. have a cash-only policy. So ensure you leave your hotel room with enough cash to get you by, and some spare in case of emergencies.
- Do address locals elders as uncle or Auntie, just like India, Singapore has a culture of respecting your elders. So, keep that in mind when you find yourself talking to local Singaporeans.
- Do remove your shoes before entering someone’s home, or a mosque, or any other place of religious prayer. Much like India, Singapore follows the culture of keeping places clean.
- Do keep yourself updated with hand gestures. Malays and Muslims will not always shake your hand. Do not shake peoples hands with your left hand, it is a sign of disrespect in some religions.
- Do dress conservatively. Singaporeans are a fashionable bunch, but they’re still conservative with the way that they’re dressed. For business occasions dress appropriately.
Don’ts
- Do not litter, we can’t stress this more. Singapore is extremely strict when it comes to public cleanliness if you’re caught littering, you’ll be made to pay a minimum of 1000 $, you might even get a free trip to jail.
- Do not smoke in public. Smoke in designated smoking areas. Like we said, Singapore is extremely strict when it comes to public cleanliness. If you’re caught smoking or throwing your cigarette butt on the ground, expect the same treatment as above.
- Do not chew or bring gum into Singapore. Chewing gums are banned in Singapore, and can lead to an immediate spot fine if you’re caught.
- Do not bring food into Singapore’s MRT (Mass Rapid Transport), offenders can be fined up to 200 Singapore Dollars.
- Do not Tip in Singapore. Tipping in Singapore, unlike India is a complete no-no. Your bill will contain a service charge, which means you are also paying for the service.
