What Does Urology Involve?

Urology is the medical specialty that treats patients with diseases and disorders affecting the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Doctors who specialize in urology are known as urologists. Atlas men’s clinic has urologists trained to handle a wide range of problems, from kidney stones to impotence to cancer. Common urological conditions include the following;

Types of urological conditions

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH is a prevalent urological condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged, resulting in several symptoms. While it can cause trouble urinating, it is not dangerous or life-threatening, and most patients do not need treatment.

The prostate gland is a part of the male anatomy that produces fluids for sperm to swim in. As men age, the prostate often grows bigger. It is normal for the prostate to grow during puberty and even after men hit their 50s or 60s. But there are instances where it reaches an abnormal size and begins to cause problems. BPH symptoms are caused by the swelling of the prostate.

Kidney stones

A kidney stone is a solid mass that forms in the kidney when chemicals in urine become concentrated. This causes minerals to crystallize and stick together, forming a hard rock-like material inside the kidneys. The majority of kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate, but struvite and uric acid stones also occur occasionally.

Bladder infections

Bacteria entering the urinary tract can cause a bladder infection, commonly called a UTI (urinary tract infection). The most common symptoms are frequent urge to void (feeling like you have to go), pain or burning sensation upon urination, blood in urine, and lower abdominal pain with nausea or vomiting. A UTI can also cause fever and chills, but these are less common symptoms.

Renal cysts

A renal cyst is a noncancerous growth on or within the kidneys that do not initially cause any problems. However, some cysts can grow quickly over time and cause problems. These include large fluid-filled cysts that may be painful or cause pressure on other parts.

Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence (UI) is the involuntary loss of urine. It is the most common type of incontinence, accounting for about 75% of adult cases. It has many causes, including childbirth injury, aging, stress incontinence, neurological conditions, overactive bladder (OAB), and prostate problems.

Find a urologist

Urologists are medical doctors who specialize in studying and treating urogenital problems. There are many types of urologic disorders, some of which can be life-threatening if not treated by a professional. A urologist is often needed to perform surgery, remove kidney stones, or diagnose bladder cancer.

If you suffer from any of these conditions, finding a urologist who can treat you is crucial. It is generally wise to see a urologist if you have experienced any of the following: difficulty urinating, painful urination, blood in your urine, frequent urination, burning pain when urinating, weakened stream when urinating, frequent urges to urinate even though you don’t have an infection, pain in your abdomen or lower back when you urinate.

Urologists work closely with other doctors, such as surgeons and internists, because they often need help diagnosing patients and performing surgery. In addition to asking for help from others, a urologist will often use imaging tests such as x-rays and ultrasounds without requiring their patient to have another appointment or procedure.

A urologist specializes in the male reproductive system, the urinary tract, and the male genital system. Atlas Men’s Clinic urologist will help you determine whether there are any factors contributing to your infertility problem and will provide you with treatment options.
